Psychotherapeutic Counselling

A safe, confidential space for one-to-one counselling

“Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” — Maya Angelou

Phyllis Malpass, psychotherapeutic counsellor

Hello

Hi, I’m Phyllis

I know how it feels to take the first step in talking about our personal issues. Having experienced anxiety and depression during times in my life, this has helped me have a natural empathy and understanding with my clients.

I offer a safe space to explore, challenge, and understand each person’s individual and unique experiences in life, having an extensive background with both mental health and charity organisations. Tailoring each to the individual.

My way of working integrates the Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches. This promotes a space in which we can explore how past experiences can frame the present, and at other times focus on effective ways to manage daily life, and reconnection with our authentic self.

My Approach

About Me

I meet people who experience a variety of distinct life experiences. In the sessions we collaboratively develop a way for you to identify and navigate these challenges, by creating your unique set of tools and resources.

I have lived experience in talking therapies, having worked in the mental health sector. I practice pluralistic counselling — “therapy in a coherent and highly client-centred way”.

Over the past decade I have worked for two charitable organisations, with a focus on homelessness and addiction, and the other working with mental health challenges of illness, bereavement, personal, and social issues.

This laid the foundations for my training to be a counsellor. I gained a unique insight into the power of how really hearing another’s experience is both rewarding and empowering for everyone who experiences it. This influenced me to train and qualify as a psychotherapist. I am committed to being non-judgemental, empathetic and understanding in each of our sessions together.

In Their Words

Reviews

“Phyllis is a wonderful therapist who genuinely cares. My work with her helped eliminate my negative mindset, identify, accept and release a lot of emotional baggage I had been carrying for decades.”

— MW

“I started having therapy sessions with Phyllis in mid-2025. I was nervous at the start due to me being autistic, as many people assume my autism is the main reason for my struggles. However, this was never the case with Phyllis! Phyllis supported me through all my issues, showed me how to manage situations more efficiently, and taught me how to express my thoughts and feelings in a journal. I’m so appreciative of the support and the skills Phyllis taught me during our sessions, and I wouldn’t hesitate to seek her help if needed in the future.”

— DSC

“Phyllis was invaluable in supporting me through a very stressful and worrying time when I felt very alone and was struggling to share my feelings. I felt very at ease talking with her, she listened without judging and helped me to express my feelings and believe they were valid. This in turn helped me find further much needed support from friends and family.”
